A code tells you which circuit complained. It doesn't tell you why. Forty years of electrical work means we're usually the ones who find the fault after somebody else replaced the part the code named.
Bring it in when
- Check engine light is on, or came on and went off again

Straight talk
Free code reads at the parts counter are fine for a starting point. They're not a diagnosis. A P0300 doesn't mean you need coils — it means something is causing a misfire, and there are a dozen candidates.
We put time into finding the actual fault. That time costs something, and it's almost always cheaper than buying parts until the light goes off.
